Locally milled slabs harvested with respect for the tree and surroundings.
We live in the gold mine of hardwood forests. All of our trees come through word of mouth, needing to be removed for a variety of reasons. We are not lumber jacks, but simply available for selective harvest on a custom scale. Sometimes these trees are simply a gift, often a trade is made, but the important part of our approach is to study the tree for best quality cuts and be as discriminating as possible under the given situation. Slabs differ from boards mainly by dimension...meaning that we prefer thicknesses and widths appropriate to larger projects and flexible design options. We attempt to capture the wildness in trees, the interesting grains and configurations offered by crotches (where branches diverge), instead of the typical lumber milling process.
Honest, handmade products inspired by the natural grain of the wood.
Each of us brings our own skills and experience to the creative moment. When studying a standing or fallen tree, we consider how grain will appear in a final product. We consider future projects, interests of clients, and our own personal tastes. The species of a tree plays a significant role in this process as well. Once the 'book' is opened, further decisions await as we read the signs revealed to us within the tree. This becomes a learning curve in that creative moment, is essential as it is exciting.
